Power women of Kibera
The mission of the Power Women:"We envision a community where every woman living with HIV/AIDS has the capacity to accept and appreciate herself, while working together to better her life, the lives of her children and the lives of Kiberans. "
We have chosen to avoid dependency and instead have decided to sustain ourselves financially and emotionally by producing and selling our products together, since together we are stronger than alone.
About the Power Women
With a population between 600,000 to 1.2 million people, Kibera is the largest slum in Eastern Africa. Located in the southwest of Nairobi, Kibera is home to one fourth of Nairobi's population, but occupies only 2% of municipal residential land.
The rate of HIV infection in Kibera approaches 30% of the population. The majority of those infected and affected are women. With no health, social or sanitary infrastructure, including fresh water or sewage, provided by the government, Kibera is a fertile ground for HIV and other diseases.
We have chosen to avoid dependency and instead have decided to sustain ourselves financially and emotionally since together we are stronger than alone.
We encourage you to support the Power Women's mission by purchasing their fairly traded products. Their products vary from jewellery made of beads to kikoys and bags. The proceeds that go towards these women will help sustain their projects and provide healthy lives for themselves, their family and community.
