'Afrika Ya Jua' means 'sunny Africa' or'Africa of the sun' in Swahili. Our products will not only let you feel the warmth and beauty of Kenya but also let the sun shine in the lives of many people in Kenya. 
The products are not only selected by quality and beauty, there is also a special story behind all of our products. This story tells you about the lives of the artisans or about the remarkable materials that are used to produce the handicraft.
Our products are all handmade by or for marginalized people in Kenya, mainly by single women, HIV-positive people or for children. By purchasing our products these people will be able to earn a fair income and support themselves and their children. Read more about the projects.
All of the jewellery, fabrics and other items are made by beautiful natural raw materials or recycled materials. Time is not an issue in Kenya, so all of the products are handmade. The products are therefore beautiful and unique handwork!
Our products are the perfect unique gifts for all kind of special occasions. The presents can be presented in giftboxes with matching giftcards.
Our mission
We support the margilized artisans of Kenya to earn a fair income by establishing a world-wide marketplace for their products. We'll focus initially on the Netherlands.
We promote the education of the children of Kenya. We'll prevent child labour.
Our history
In 2009, the founders of Afrika Ya Jua lived in Nairobi to be able to adopt their son. During this period they have fallen in love with Kenya and its people. They have experienced the fantastic wildlife, the friendliness of the people and of course the beauty and uniqueness of the products of Kenya. Since the people in Kenya still have the time, the products are being handmade with the necessary time and attention to turn them into remarkable items.
During the same period the founders of Afrika ya Jua have experienced the enormous differences in wealth between the people within Kenya or even within Nairobi. A third of the people of Nairobi is living in slums. These people try to make an income for themselves and their children by producing the most beautiful jewellery or fabrics. However the markets for these products are normally very local and therefore small.
These two findings were the inspiration for the foundation of Afrika Ya Jua.
Africa Ya Jua will provide a webshop were artisians can sell their products worldwide and can therefor earn a fair income. People all over the world will therefor be able to purchase these unique products at a reasonable price and enjoy the beauty of Kenya. Initially we will focusing on the market in the Netherlands.
